As part of the Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets Phase 2 Project, crews will be closing a section of Auburn Boulevard overnight to install a new gateway arch across Auburn Boulevard at the city’s northern border with Roseville, the city announced Wednesday.

To safely complete this work, Auburn Boulevard will be fully closed overnight between Whyte Avenue and Twin Oaks Avenue on Tuesday, June 23, and Wednesday, June 24.

Motorists will be able to use Orlando Avenue, Cirby Way, Sunrise Avenue/Boulevard, and Twin Oaks Avenue as detours to circumvent the construction if traveling on the road during the overnight hours, the city said.

The new gateway arch is expected to include the message “Welcome to Citrus Heights,” as well as Lincoln Highway placards, commemorating the original route of the Lincoln Highway down Auburn Boulevard. Following installation, in early July, crews will activate the new traffic signal, which will be associated with the archway, city officials said.

Construction has been taking place along Auburn Boulevard from just north of Antelope Road to the northern city limits for about two years and is expected to be complete this summer. Immediately surrounding the new gateway archway at the city limits, crews have also revamped entrances to shopping plazas on both sides and added medians and several turn pockets along the boulevard to help increase safety for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

Other improvements have included new street lighting and landscaping along the boulevard, undergrounding of utilities, sidewalk construction, and new striping and additional crosswalks added to several streets where there were none before, as well as signal and crossing upgrades.

“Thank you for your patience as this exciting milestone takes shape,” the city said Wednesday. “The Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets Phase 2 Project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed in the coming months.”
