A short police pursuit in Citrus Heights overnight led to a crash, tens of thousands of dollars in property damage, and an arrest.
Just after midnight on Monday morning, Citrus Heights Police said an officer on patrol observed a vehicle traveling on Sunrise Boulevard at a high rate of speed in a 40-mile-an-hour speed limit zone.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop., but when the officer’s patrol lights were activated, the suspect vehicle then accelerated to at least 90 miles an hour down Sunrise Boulevard toward Twin Oaks Avenue, at which point a police pursuit was initiated.
Just before Twin Oaks Avenue, the vehicle turned rapidly into an apartment complex, plowed through the front gate, and “sent it flying through the parking lot.” Police said Monday that property damage was estimated to be at least $20,000. No other buildings or persons were hit or injured during the incident.
Following the collision, 20-year-old Daniel Voronov was arrested on multiple charges, including felony evasion of a peace officer, child abuse with the possibility of great bodily injury, and on a previous warrant out for his arrest.
Two other juvenile passengers were also in the car and were briefly detained then released, police said. The driver and passengers were not injured, though the vehicle sustained damage.
Sacramento Main Jail records show Voronov is still in custody and is not eligible for bail. He is expected to appear in court on Nov. 4 at 1;30 p.m.
