Citrus Heights Police arrest intoxicated driver with child in car

By Sara Beth Williams–
A Citrus Heights man was arrested late Sunday night on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment after he allegedly crashed into a parked car while a child was inside his vehicle, according to the Citrus Heights Police Department.

Police said the incident occurred around 11:32 p.m. on Nov. 16 near Antelope Road and Sunrise Boulevard, in the parking lot near Jack in the Box. The driver of the parked vehicle called 911 after the suspect’s car struck theirs.

According to police, the male driver, described as a 41-year-old, appeared intoxicated immediately after the collision. Before officers arrived, the suspect reportedly fled in his vehicle, then returned to the parking lot where police were able to detain him.

When officers contacted the suspect, they noted he showed “obvious signs of influence,” according to Sgt. Ryan Smith. The man was arrested.

Smith said officers prioritize the safety of children during incidents like these. “Typically we attempt to reach family members or guardians whenever possible,” Smith said of incidents where one guardian is arrested. When guardians can’t be reached, Child Protective Services is contacted to assist.

Police have not released the name of the suspect, and no injuries were reported.
