A fire Tuesday evening at Kingswood Elementary School prompted a response from Citrus Heights Police and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
Emergency crews were called to the school shortly after 6 p.m. after reports of a tree on fire on the campus. According to Sac Metro fire officials, crews arrived to find a pine tree on fire near several portable classrooms on the property.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. Fire caused damage to at least one portable classroom but did not spread to regular classroom buildings, police said.
No classes or other activities were in session at the time of the incident. Sac Metro officials said only maintenance staff were on the premises when the fire broke out.
Authorities reported that three juveniles were at the scene attempting to put out the fire before first responders arrived. Police said the minors are not currently suspected of any wrongdoing.
Two injuries were reported in connection with the incident. One individual suffered smoke inhalation, and another sustained a small burn to the ankle, according to authorities.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation. Officials said it is still unclear how the pine tree initially caught fire.
