A local mattress store is holding a retirement sale as the company prepares to wind down operations at all four of its remaining locations in California.

Matthew’s Mattress, a family-owned mattress chain with four stores in California, is planning to close its Citrus Heights location, along with three others, according to store staff.

Currently, a banner hangs in front of the store’s windows, stating that the store is holding a retirement sale where “Everything must go.”

There are four stores left, staff said over the phone, and all stores are planning to close, but on different time frames.

The Citrus Heights location on Greenback Lane does not have a date of closure, but will close once its merchandise is liquidated, staff said Wednesday. The store reports it has already sold about one third of its inventory as of Wednesday.

Discounted price varies by product, the store manager said, adding that older products or floor models are generally less expensive than newer products. Although there aren’t any specific sales percentage discounts, staff also added that additional savings are possible during Memorial Day weekend.

Leasing documents shared with The Sentinel, along with a sign out in front of the store, show the 3,870-square-foot freestanding building located at 8042 Greenback Ln. is for lease, and has building signage and a dedicated monument sign clearly visible along the busy boulevard.

The Sentinel reached out to the owner of Matthew’s Mattress for comment but has not heard back.

Matthew’s Mattress first opened in 1991, and has multiple locations, including locations in Roseville, Sacramento, and Citrus Heights. The owner of the store launched the company at only 19 years old.

Over the years, the company created its own line of mattresses that offered better warranties than name-brand mattresses, Mayfield said. Matthew’s Mattress also carries name-brands alongside its own line of mattresses, according to one store manager.

The company emphasizes a “low-pressure” sales atmosphere, Mayfield said, explaining that she would rather someone take home the right mattress the first time, rather than have them feel pressured to buy something, and then return it.

Matthew’s Mattress sells mostly mattresses and box springs, with some bed frames available in select sizes. The mattress store is located at 8042 Greenback Ln. and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
