Citrus Heights Police say they have dropped the search for a suspect who reportedly fired gunshots while at a local apartment complex Monday night.

Officers responded to reports of the sound of gunshots being fired at an apartment complex in the area of Auburn Oaks Court just before 7:30 p.m. Monday night. Upon arrival, officers isolated a specific location from witness information and began searching for an individual witnesses described as a masked man wearing all black, according to witnesses and local news reports.

Heavy police presence could be seen on Auburn Oaks Court Monday night as authorities searched the apartment complex in the vicinity with the help of drones.

The man was believed to have reportedly fired gunshots off and was reportedly then seen running into an apartment unit, witnesses said.

A family member alerted police and then was in contact with a suspected gunman, who attempted to assist with communication between law enforcement and the person of interest.

Police told local news stations that SWAT was called in due to the circumstances of the possibility of a gunman at large. Law enforcement made entry into the apartment associated with the person of interest, but did not find the individual.

Tuesday evening, police said after searching the entire complex on Monday night, authorities were unable to locate the subject in question and cannot at this time, confirm a crime was committed. Police found no victims of gunshot wounds, and there was no damage to property from gunshots, police said Tuesday.

There is believed to be no danger to the public at this time.
