It's been one year since Citrus Heights legalized keeping backyard hens on smaller sized residential lots, and city staff report that the new regulations are working out fine.
"Chickens are doing great," Alison Bermudez with the city's planning division, reported to the city council during a brief Nov. 9 report. "A year ago you did adopt the zoning code amendment that allowed them, and our complaints have actually gone down. Code enforcement's been very pleased and has not been inundated with phone calls, so I think we got it right."
Citrus Heights council members voted 5-0 in favor of dropping the prior restriction on backyard hen-keeping on Aug. 11, 2016, following persistent requests from some residents in the city. Prior regulations banned hens from being kept on residential lots under 10,000 square feet in size, but the new ordinance allows up to six hens to be kept on any size lot...

Liquor license: The Food Maxx store at 6982 Sunrise Blvd. is seeking to change their existing alcohol license to allow for the sale of distilled spirits, in addition to beer and wine currently sold at the location. A public hearing will be held on whether to approve a "Letter of Public Convenience and Necessity," which is necessary for the store to obtain before a license can be issued. A number of community members submitted emails opposing the license upgrade, while city staff and police recommend the council allow a license to be issued...

It's a local "fact" that's made the rounds, but it actually isn't true. It even made it to the #1 spot on the city's "Top 20 Facts About Citrus Heights" released earlier this year.
"At incorporation, Citrus Heights was the first city to incorporate in the state since 1963," reads the first item on the Top 20 facts listed on the city's website, as of Oct. 6th. Thanks to several comments from our readers and some subsequent fact-checking, The Sentinel found that in fact there were 88 cities that incorporated in California from 1963 up to 1997, when Citrus Heights officially incorporated as a city.
Asked how the incorrect date made its way onto the city's "Top 20" facts, city staff member Devon Rodriguez, who presented the facts to the city council earlier this year, said the date had come from the city's volunteer archivist...
