Warm weather is now here and there’s plenty of activities for all ages to choose from as the Sunrise Recreation and Park District kicks off its summer season.
Below is a sampling of some popular summer activities you might want to add to your calendar. A complete guide to all its activities and sports programs through September 29 at the park district’s office at 7801 Auburn Blvd.
Adults 50 and older can also purchase an annual membership card for just $30 at the district office, which allows participants to participate in as many individual programs as they prefer all year long. Program categories include cards and games, arts and crafts, dance and fitness and bowling at Fireside Lanes.
Swimming. The Rusch Park Pool opened on May 25 for the summer. Pool hours are Saturday and Sunday through August 18, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday, June 11 to August 16, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Daily fees: Tots (2 and under) are free. Those age 3 and up are $4. The cost of a 2019 Sunrise Swim Pass is $45 for an individual and $140 for a family of four.
Annual swim passes for all pools including public and lap swim, and are available at both pool cashier booths, and at the Rusch Park District Office. Registration is open for summer swim lessons which start at Rusch Park Pool on June 3. Private lessons: $84 per four class session. Quick Fitness. If you’re looking to get fit this summer, you might try Beginning Quick Fit, a basic, total-body, 30-minute workout utilizing free weights and body weight, medicine balls, and core movements. Excellent for those ages 14+ and up with limited time due to work schedules, homework or family responsibilities. A choice of four Tuesday/Thursday sessions beginning on June 4 through the end of September, from 8 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $50. Just bring free weights, a towel, water, gym attire and a fun attitude to the Crosswoods Community Center at 6742 Auburn Blvd. A $60 punch card is good for eight classes within two months.
Adult Fitness Classes. Multiple sessions of three popular beginner, intermediate and advanced fitness classes: “Sit and Fit,” “Power Hour” and “Push the Limit,” will be offered throughout the summer at the Rusch Park Auditorium. These fitness classes are for adults looking to improve strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. Classes will include chair aerobics, strength training and breathing exercises. Participants have an option to bring small dumbbell weights for added intensity. Start and cost times vary, so check the Sunrise Recreation and Park District schedule for more information.
Volleyball. Those 18 years and up will enjoy Open Gym Volleyball at the Rusch Park Gym on Monday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Reserve a few hours on Monday nights for a fun workout playing your favorite sport. Yoga. Beginning or returning yogi can purchase a punch card for six individual sessions of yoga (relaxing or strengthening) that can be used at any time this summer for $60. Sessions for participants age 15 and older will be held at the Crosswoods Community Center at 6742 Auburn Blvd. Practice a variety of poses to stretch, strengthen, and relax the entire body.
Adult Basketball. 5 on 5 Adult Basketball Leagues are forming now. Participants can choose between a Wednesday league starting on June 5, with games on Wednesday evenings or a Sunday league starting July 14 with afternoon and evening games at the Rusch Park Auditorium Gym. The deadline to register for the Wednesday league has already passed, but registration for the Sunday league continues through July 9 at 5 p.m. The team fee is $460. Dance. Want to learn how to dance? Two sessions of social dancing, waltz and foxtrot begin in June at the Rusch Park Dance Studio on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. Cost: $40 per single, or $60 per couple. Richard Kowaleski, a popular dance instructor with unique teaching methods and a delightful sense of humor, puts his students at ease so they can learn quickly while also having fun. Beginners and experienced dancers alike are taught easy to learn moves that impress. No partner is required. Just bring smooth-soled shoes with good heal support. Line Dancing. Line dancing has become a favorite activity worldwide as a great low-impact way to meet others and keep fit. Using a variety of music styles, beginners can learn the basics and progress to become more advance dancers. No partner is needed, and new beginners are always welcome. Classes are ongoing at Rusch Park and meet on Fridays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. New classes start on July 5. The class is divided into four progressive half-hour levels with new beginners starting at 12:30 p.m. Each student is entitled to one hour of class selecting from two of the four levels. A $32 punch card is good for four classes anytime within two months.
Aqua-Cise. Make a splash with Aqua-Cise! Sessions of Aqua-Cise start July 30 at Rusch Park Pool and are designed for individuals of all fitness levels, from age 13 on up. Join in the fun on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 30 to August 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost: $60. Families can also choose from a broad selection of summer sports camps this year. Here are just a few.
Football camp. A summer youth flag football camp for boys and girls ages 4-14 who are planning to participate in the NFL Flag Football League this fall runs from June 1-15 from 9 a.m. to noon at Tempo Park, 13099 Fair Oaks Blvd. in Citrus Heights. Learn the fundamentals of football, teamwork and the rewards of competition. Cost: $50. For more information contact Jake at (916) 725-6287 or Kelly at (916) 725-8843.
Swim camp. A Multi-Sport and Swim Camp for boys and girls ages 8-14 will be held Monday through Friday, June 17-21 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Rusch Park and Pool. Fee: $145. Have fun taking your sports skills to the next level each morning with instruction from Sunrise coaches, and spend the afternoon playing and improving your swimming at the pool. This camp includes kickball, soccer, basketball and other sports along with free swim time during public swim. Participants are asked to bring athletic clothing, swim attire, sunscreen, and lunch. A snack will be provided.
Junior baseball. Batter up! – A free Junior Giants Baseball program will be held from June 15 to August 3. The program is designed to focus more on the fundamentals of the game and less on competition and focuses on the “Four Bases of Character Development:” Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and Teamwork. A great start for those who have never played and a fun experience for those who have. Participants will receive 1-2 practices and 1 game per week. Register at gojrgiants.org
Swim Team. The Sunrise Sharks Swim Team is open to swimmers ages 4-18. Enjoy a great way to stay cool this summer, keep in shape and make new friends. Meets will be held on Saturdays in June and July. Sunrise Sharks are in the Eureka Conference of the NorCal Swim League. Practices and home meets take place at Rusch Pool. Each swimmer/family has a fundraising goal of $40 volunteer hour commitment. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle independently, provide a copy of a birth certificate at tryouts, and must be at least 4 years old. Basketball camp. Looking to improve your basketball skills this summer? The Mesa Verde Summer Basketball Camp is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 14 years from July 8-11, Monday through Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Mesa Verde High School Gymnasium. The camp provides an opportunity for youth, regardless of ability, talent, or skill level, to learn the fundamentals of the game of basketball. The Sunrise Recreation and Park District offers walk-in registration for most programs and activities at the district office at Rusch Park Community Center, 7801 Auburn Blvd. Cash, check or credit cards are accepted.
Online registration for most programs can also be completed at SunriseParks.com with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express card. Materials fees are payable to the instructor at the first individual class session. In the event the parks district cancels a class, event, or program, the district says a full refund will be provided.
