CNN lists Citrus Heights among mass shootings last weekend
A shooting that injured four people at a bar in Citrus Heights last weekend made it on a list of 11 mass shootings across the nation, as reported by CNN. The news agency defined “mass shootings” as an incident where four or more people are struck by gunfire, excluding the shooter. (See CNN story)
Garage fire displaces five people in Citrus Heights
A fire on Sandalwood Drive around 2 a.m. Friday morning caused damage to a garage and home, according to CBS 13. The news station reported five people were displaced due to the fire, but no one was injured. Firefighters credited smoke detectors in the home with likely helping get the home’s occupants outside safely. (See video)
Columnist names Citrus Heights in call to ‘demilitarize’ police
An opinion column published in The Sacramento Bee on Friday called for “demilitarizing” police in the Sacramento region, including Citrus Heights where the author noted the police department owns an “MRAP.” The department’s MRAP, or Mine Resistant Armored Protected vehicle, was acquired through a military surplus vehicle program through the federal government and is used by the SWAT team for high-risk operations. Obituary: Jennie Ellen Azbill (1930-2021)
Jennie Azbill, a longtime resident of Fair Oaks and later Citrus Heights, passed away on April 30. Azbill and her husband Jim moved to Fair Oaks in 1957, before moving to Orangevale to raise cattle, according to an obituary published in The Sacramento Bee last week. She later worked as an elementary school cook for the San Juan Unified School District for 22 years and spent her final years in a senior living park in Citrus Heights. She is survived by two children. A service and reception will be held at 10 a.m. on May 21 at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park. (See full obituary)
