Sentinel staff report–
Motorists traveling past the intersection of Greenback Lane and Auburn Boulevard likely saw crews begin installation of fencing along median strips last year, but some have been left wondering why the project appears to have halted prior to completion.
City of Citrus Heights spokeswoman Nichole Baxter told The Sentinel in an email Thursday that the project’s completion was delayed due to “unforeseen material-related items and underground utility impacts.” She said staff opted to put the project on hold during inclement weather in order to get everything in order and reduce traffic impacts.
The fencing, part of a “Various Signalized Intersection Safety Improvements” project, is slated to resume in February and will take 5-6 weeks to complete, Baxter said. The project’s $950,000 contract was awarded in December of 2020 and included 2,500-linear feet of fencing as well as the installation of new traffic signal indicators at 30 intersections, which drivers may have seen featuring a reflective yellow border.
Q&A: What’s with the new yellow border on signals in Citrus Heights?
As previously reported, the fencing is designed to protect public safety by discouraging jaywalking across the busy thoroughfare, with fencing approved for median areas of three legs of the intersection, extending on both sides of Greenback Lane and one leg of Auburn Boulevard. A similar approach reduced pedestrian-related accidents along Greenback Lane between Birdcage Street and Mariposa Avenue.
