A new sushi buffet is now open in a restaurant location that has been vacant for years on Sunrise Boulevard.
Hibachi Buffet Sushi and Grill is located at 5623 Sunrise Blvd., next to El Tapatio. With just 11 reviews so far, the new restaurant has an average of 4.1-stars on Yelp.
Customers can expect to pay between $14.99 for lunch or $20.99 for dinner Monday through Friday. Weekend buffet prices are $21.99. There are discounts for children, and the business is currently offering a 15 percent soft opening coupon.
The restaurant’s current hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, according to the business’s Yelp page.
The building has been vacant since the former China Buffet closed its doors in 2018, and Sunrise Marketplace Executive Director Kathilynn Carpenter said significant interior work was needed before the restaurant could open. The Sentinel previously reported signage announcing a new restaurant at the site was up as early as February of this year.
The Sentinel previously reported the site was the focal point of a controversial move to potentially open a gas station and car wash in the area. El Tapatio manager Hector Alcazar told The Sentinel at the time he would oppose automotive related uses of the site, preferring to see more dining options in the Sunrise Marketplace district.

The issue came before the City Council during an October meeting last year. Several council members expressed reservations about telling private property owners what they could and couldn’t do with their property, but ultimately sided with the city’s vision and feedback from residents.
The council voted 5-0 in favor of making the Sunrise MarketPlace business improvement district a destination-spot for diners and shoppers, with a ban on specific uses. The approved overlay ban restricts five specific uses within the Sunrise MarketPlace, mostly dealing with auto-intensive uses, but including a prohibition on any new personal storage facilities.
