Volunteers in Citrus Heights and throughout Sacramento County are preparing to undertake this year’s “Point-in-Time” count of people experiencing homelessness.
The count is organized by Sacramento Steps Forward, and will take place on Jan. 24 and 25 this year. The count is typically conducted every other year, but was put on hold during the pandemic.
Chair of the Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team, Irene Hronicek, said there are command centers in Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, and throughout Sacramento. Volunteers undergo a training prior to conducting the count, she said.
Hronicek underscored the need for volunteers to help with the count.
“The Point in Time Count is the method utilized as an effort to survey and count the number of people suffering from homelessness in our City, County and State,” she said. “This undertaking needs volunteers to help visit the huge geographical areas that are to be surveyed. When there are not enough volunteers, whole areas (perhaps in our City) will not be surveyed.”
The Point-in-Time count data is required by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provides estimates of homelessness and demographic data for those living on the streets, according to Sac Steps Forward. The count also helps state, county, and city leaders develop plans and direct funding to needed areas, Hronicek said.
Volunteer information is posted on Sacramento Steps Forward’s website.
