A Citrus Heights man is facing up to 20 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine, following federal child porn charges being filed against him this month.
According to a Feb. 20 news release from U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert, 36-year-old Kyle Travis Colton has been charged with the receipt of child pornography. The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on Feb. 15, 2024, was unsealed and revealed the charges against Colton.
Court documents indicate that between July 2022 and December 2023, Colton allegedly received “visual depictions of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.” The U.S. Attorney’s office emphasized that the charges are “only allegations” at this point, and noted that Colton is presumed innocent “until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
KCRA-Sacramento and other regional news outlets reported that Colton had been arrested in December in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.
The latest child porn indictment is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project enlists the help of federal, state, and local resources to rescue victims and prosecute those who sexually exploit children.
In 2022, the project led to the sentencing of another Citrus Heights man who was found guilty of setting up hidden cameras in his home in order to capture nude images of a victim he shared the home with.
