Students interested in shaping the future of Citrus Heights now have additional time to apply for the city’s newly approved Youth Advisory Commission.
City officials announced that the application period has been extended, giving more time and opportunity for local students to join the inaugural commission. A new deadline for applications has not been given.
The Youth Advisory Commission will serve as an advisory body to the Citrus Heights City Council, providing feedback on city projects, programs and services that affect young people.
Commission members will advise city leaders on policies and initiatives impacting youth, recommend ways to increase youth engagement in civic life, and participate in community projects and events as ambassadors for city programs. Members will also review proposed ordinances and programs affecting youth, identify youth-led initiatives that align with city priorities, and prepare an annual report summarizing the commission’s activities, recommendations and accomplishments.
The commission is expected to consist of 13 students who live in Citrus Heights and are enrolled in grades 8 through 12.
The city plans to have students serve one-year terms from September through May and commissioners may be reappointed for one additional consecutive term, allowing for a maximum of two years of service.
Meetings will be held at Citrus Heights City Hall at least once each month between September and May. Members are expected to attend monthly commission meetings as well as City Council meetings periodically, to remain actively involved in the commission’s work.
To be eligible, applicants must live in the City of Citrus Heights, be enrolled in grades 8 through 12, and commit to attending monthly meetings during the commission’s term.
According to the city, the Youth Advisory Commission is designed to give students an opportunity to gain leadership experience, learn how local government works and have a voice in decisions that affect young people in the community.
The city says there is no official deadlines for applications, and that the number of submitted applications will be evaluated in August and city staff will determine next steps at that time. The anticipation is for youth advisory commissioners to begin their term in in the fall.
Applications are available online through the city’s website.
