Citrus Heights expands sandbag availability to four weekends ahead of winter weather

By Sara Beth Williams–
Ahead of a predicted record-strength El Nino winter, Citrus Heights has announced expanded distribution of their sandbags program for local residents.

The city announced Wednesday that four additional weekends have been made available for sandbag distributions, with the first one slated for Saturday, Oct. 17. Weekend distribution will allow residents who aren’t available during weekdays to still obtain free sandbags.

During the week, residents can pick up sandbags at City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are limited to 10 bags per residence and must bring identification or a utility bill for verification of Citrus Heights residency.

As part of this year’s expanded weekend distribution, the city has scheduled additional pickup opportunities from 9 a.m. to noon on the following dates. Quantity of sandbags is limited on the weekends.

  • Saturday, Oct. 17, at City Hall
  • Saturday, Oct. 24, at C-Bar-C Park
  • Saturday, Oct. 31, at C-Bar-C Park
  • Saturday, Nov. 7, at C-Bar-C Park

Sand and sandbags are available at two locations: Citrus Heights City Hall, 6360 Fountain Square Drive, and C-Bar-C Park, 8273 Oak Avenue. Shovels will be available.

The city also reminds residents that fallen trees in roadways or on sidewalks should be reported by calling 916-727-4770 during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours, residents can contact the Citrus Heights Police Department at 916-727-5500.

Residents are responsible for removing fallen trees that were growing on private property and may contact a local tree service for assistance.

Additionally, beginning in November and through January, residents may place up to six bags of leaves next to their green organic waste cart on each scheduled collection day and bags will be collected by Republic Services at no cost.
