During a Thursday-night presentation to the City Council the city’s waste collection service provider gave an annual update with details on how much waste from Citrus Heights was sent to landfills or recycled during 2021.
A municipal administrator with Republic Services told the council that a total of 23,480 tons of trash had been collected and sent to landfills, along with handling another 211 yards of illegal dumping. A little over 1,000 tons of bulky items were also collected.
Republic Services also recycled a total of around 11,000 tons of green waste, 6,000 tons of blue-bin recyclables, and about 4,000 tons of bulky items.
The company also diverted from landfills around 1,800 bags of batteries, 4,700 gallons of used oil, and nearly 1,000 used oil filters. Additionally, 122 tons of appliances were collected, along with 17 tons of e-waste and 275 household sharps containers.
By contract, Republic Services is obligated to divert at least 40% of waste away from landfills. Diversion averaged 47% last year, according to a spokesman.
