Sentinel staff report–
Drivers traveling along Sunrise Boulevard near Greenback Lane can now see a new mural, the latest of eight large murals that have popped up over the past two years in the Sunrise MarketPlace (SMP).

The mural is part of “Murals in the MarketPlace,” a project spearheaded by the Sunrise MarketPlace business improvement district, with partial funding from the City of Citrus Heights’ Economic Development Fund. The latest mural depicts five different images of workers, and appears on the side of a building now home to Purpose-Built, a work-wear company.

Other murals include a large “DESTINATION” painting on the side of PetSmart and several nature-themed murals in the Marketplace at Birdcage, among others. Photos and locations of each mural are posted on the SunriseMarketPlace’s website.

According to the business improvement district’s website, SMP worked with Wide Open Walls in 2021 to bring murals to the district, in an effort to “create a sense of community, beautify spaces, abate graffiti and reduce criminal activity, express historical and cultural identity, and inspire creativity and wonder.” The district also previously partnered with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to wrap utility boxes with artwork, through a “Masterpieces in the MarketPlace” project.
