Here’s what roadway projects are coming up in Citrus Heights

By Sara Beth Williams–
Warmer spring weather means construction season is in full swing, and multiple capital improvement projects are beginning or continuing this month.

Citrus Heights City Engineer Leslie Blomquist recently outlined several upcoming projects that are expected to being and finish this year:

Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets Project Phase 2: The $31 million capital infrastructure project is almost complete, with an anticipated completion date of August 2026, Blomquist said.

Items that still need to be completed include:

  • Construction of medians
  • Roadway resurfacing
  • Installation of the “Welcome to Citrus Heights” arch with integrated signal light

“The corridor is really taking shape and we’re very excited to be crossing the finish line very soon,” Blomquist said. The project began in July 2024 and was scheduled to take two years to complete.

Road Resurfacing in 2026: Construction began this March on multiple roads throughout the city identified for resurfacing in a three-year pavement preservation plan adopted in 2023 by the City Council.

Over 100 roads are scheduled to be resurfaced, including Antelope Road from Saybrook to Lauppe Lane, and Primrose Avenue. The cost of resurfacing is estimated to be $9.3 million, with an additional $13,500 reimbursement from Roseville for the joint resurfacing of Whyte Avenue. The overall road resurfacing project is expected to be completed in the fall.

2026/2027 drainage and accessibility upgrades:
The 2026 and 2027 storm drain and accessibility upgrade projects have been combined into one project to help streamline the process.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2026 following resurfacing of streets in the first phase of road resurfacing project. The drainage and accessibility project includes:

  • Construction of 246 curb ramps
  • 30,000 square feet of sidewalk repair
  • 10,850 linear feet of curbs and gutter repair
  • Storm drain repair – amount of feet needed for repair still being analyzed.

The project will also include upgrades to two intersections, including Auburn Boulevard and Carriage Drive, where the city plans to add in a missing crosswalk, and widen the sidewalk from the school to the intersection.

Because Greenback Lane is scheduled to be resurfaced in 2027, the city plans to complete intersection upgrades to the intersection of Greenback Lane and Birdcage Street prior, including adding in a missing crosswalk.

Road Resurfacing in 2027: Following the completion of drainage and accessibility upgrades, the city expects to begin road resurfacing again in the spring of 2027. The project includes the resurfacing of 250 roads throughout the city, with some key corridors including,

  • Auburn Boulevard, from Sylvan Corners to Manzanita
  • Greenback Lane, from Dewey Drive to Birdcage Street
  • Sylvan Road, from Sylvan Corners to Greenback Lane

Roseville Road and Butternut Drive: The Roseville Road/Butternut Drive intersection improvements project should begin within the next few weeks, Blomquist said. At a cost of about $1 million, the project is expected to include:

  • Installation of 584 yellow retroreflective backplates on stoplights throughout the city
  • Improvements to Roseville Rd./Butternut Drive, and Butternut Drive/Villaveiw
  • Addition of a southbound left-turn pocket on Roseville Road leading into Butternut Drive
  • Roadway resurfacing, pedestrian enhancements
