Rainfall on Saturday prompted a shift to a drive-thru event at the Kiwanis Club’s annual Easter egg hunt held at Rusch Community Park.
The 40th annual event took place from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on March 30, with initial plans calling for a DJ, various vendors, and family fun activities. However, rainfall on Saturday morning before and during the event prompted organizers to shift plans.
Amanda Subia, treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Citrus Heights, said grass was too wet and muddy to use for the egg hunts.
Despite periodic rain showers and the change in itinerary, the parking lot in front of the Rusch Park basketball courts quickly filled with families. Vendor booths stretched in a line along the parking lot and booth organizers and Key Club volunteers handed out Easter eggs and cookies to children and families on foot and those in cars passing through.
Several Easter bunnies mingled with guests, and children had the opportunity to take photos with the Easter bunny in a photo booth. Vendors included the Kiwanis Club of Citrus Heights, the Citrus Heights Police Department, the Mesa Verde Key Club, and others.
The Kiwanis Club was established in 1972 as an international youth-oriented community service club that supports community projects around the world. Locally, the club helps support food banks in both Citrus Heights and Orangevale, as well as helping the Salvation Army, the Citrus Heights Police Activities League, the Sayonara Center, and multiple local high schools in Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks and Orangevale.
The Kiwanis Club meets every third Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Round Table Pizza located on Sunrise and Antelope. More information is posted on the club’s website.
