What happens next?
Thanks to Prop 14, the top two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election held in November.
In 2010, Californians passed Proposition 14, which established the top-two, all-party primary election system, sometimes referred to as a “jungle” primary according to Ballotpedia.
Before Proposition 14, registered voters only voted for those candidates who were part of their affiliated party. Two winners, one from each party, advanced to the general election.
After Proposition 14 passed, all candidates for most state and federal offices appear on a single primary ballot, and all voters can vote for any candidate, regardless of party.
The top-two system applies to governor and other statewide offices, the State Legislature, U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.
It does not apply to presidential primaries, party central committee races, or nonpartisan offices such as judges and school superintendents.
Schedule for reporting counted votes:
Election results will change throughout the ballot counting period as vote-by-mail ballots, provisional ballots (including conditional voter registration provisional ballots), and other ballots are tallied.
The next update from Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections will be released on Tuesday, June 9 at 4:15 p.m., and then every three to four days following.
Results will be officially certified by July 10, 2026.
