A commercial semi truck hauling walnuts overturned Tuesday night on eastbound Interstate 80 near Antelope Road, prompting an emergency response from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and the Citrus Heights Police Department.

According to Metro Fire, crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. and arrived to find the truck on its side with diesel fuel leaking from the vehicle.

Firefighters worked to secure the scene, contain the fuel spill and address additional hazards to the roadway and surrounding area, the fire district said.

Multiple witnesses at the scene posted photos on social media showing freeway traffic at a standstill and a big rig on its side. Some lanes going east and westbound were shut down for at least two hours according to witness accounts. The Antelope Road overpass was also reportedly shut down temporarily.

The driver of the truck was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and later released. No other injuries were reported.

The Citrus Heights Police Department remained on scene Tuesday night investigating the cause of the crash.

Metro Fire also issued a reminder for drivers to adjust their speed for road conditions and ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts.
