The Mesa Verde High School girls’ softball team won their first playoff game in 30 years after coming back from 18 runs down to win by one run.
At their first playoff game Monday, May 11, the girls’ softball team, which won 8 games in league and 11 overall, played against West Campus as part of the Sac-Joaquin Section D-5 Softball Playoffs.
MaxPreps recapped the playoff game in a video shared on its website and social media, calling the outcome an “improbable 18-run comeback.”
West Campus quickly put up a 9-0 lead after the first inning, and by the bottom of the fourth, West Campus led Mesa Verde 19-1.
The Mavericks then rallied and scored 8 runs in the fourth inning and added another 2 in the fifth inning. closing the deficit to 21-11. In the sixth inning, the Mavericks scored another 9 runs, bringing their total to 20.
After West Campus scored 2 more runs in the seventh, bringing the lead to 23-20, Mesa Verde drew a walk with two outs, which led to two more runs. After scoring again near the end of the game, the Mavericks pulled off an 18-run comeback to win their first playoff game in 30 years, according to MaxPreps.
The Mesa Verde girls’ softball team was ranked third in the Sierra Delta League with an 8-6 league play record going into the playoffs. West Campus was ranked third in the Greater Sacramento softball Sac-Joaquin section and held an 11-9 record overall, with a 10-4 record in league play.
The Mavericks moved on to their second playoff game on May 13 but lost to Hughson 14 to 0.
Hughson ranked number one in the Trans Valley League, with a 12-0 record in league play and 20 wins to 4 losses for the 2025-26 season.
