Citrus Heights Police, school district to host e-bike safety course

By Sara Beth Williams–
The Citrus Heights Police Department is partnering with the San Juan Unified School District and several e-bike industry organizations to host its first E-bike Safety Course later this summer.

The course will be held Saturday, July 25, at Mesa Verde High School and is designed for youth ages 10 to 18 who ride or are interested in riding electric bicycles. Organizers are asking parents or guardians to attend with minors, and remain present throughout the course. The event is free to attend.

There will be two sessions available, each three hours long. The first session will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and a second session will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees who own an e-bike can bring their bike and must also bring a helmet. Space is limited. Those interested should register here.

According to the Police Department, the event aims to educate young riders and their families about safe riding practices as e-bikes continue to grow in popularity among children and teenagers.

Participants will receive both classroom instruction and hands-on riding training experience intended to help build confidence and develop safe riding habits. Topics covered will include California e-bike laws and regulations, roadway awareness, traffic safety, proper helmet use, equipment checks and safe riding techniques.

The course is being presented in partnership with the San Juan Unified School District, California E-Bikes, Super73 and Volt Verified, organizers said.

Law enforcement officials say the event is intended to help families better understand the responsibilities that come with operating an e-bike and to promote safer riding throughout the community.

E-bikes have become increasingly common on local streets, bike paths and around school campuses, prompting both growing concern and attention to rider education and safety. The course will provide an opportunity for young riders to learn current regulations while practicing real-world riding skills in a supervised environment.

Mesa Verde High School is located at 7501 Carriage Drive.
