Sentinel staff report–
Citrus Heights police on Friday began deploying additional officers on the streets to target drivers suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The operation is funded by federal grant money and will continue through Jan. 2, the department said in a news release. The additional patrols will be roving the streets between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.
Police also warned that some prescription and over-the-counter medication can impair driving. The department also clarified that while medicinal and recreational marijuana use is legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Police said drivers caught while under the influence of drugs or alcohol typically face around $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
